The Tang Museum’s ambitious cross-disciplinary project, Accelerate: Access and Inclusion at the Tang Teaching Museum combines exhibitions, events, digital access, and print and digital publishing through the lens of access and diversity at a teaching museum. As part of the project, we are designing three annual print publications that are both engaging and scholarly, and which both document the project and advance it. The first two are now published and the third is on the way.

Drawing from our work on the Tang’s website and visual identity, and closely paired with our simultaneous work on the new collection and digital publishing area of the site, our design system for the magazine incorporates an efficient use of templates, while leaving room for spontaneity. The magazine is also one driver of the digital publishing platform’s content, and both are strongly supported by the Tang’s rich and diverse permanent collection as well as its dynamic temporary exhibitions and programming.

“Discovery and change happens in community with others as knowledge and experience spreads. We are grateful to the artists, faculty, students, supporters, Tang staff, and local community that participated in this first year of action and exploration that has propelled us to move up in our goals, to set the bar of access and inclusion higher, and to support innovation and individual growth with gusto.” –Ian Berry, Dayton Director of The Tang Museum

The magazine won first prize in the 2018 American Alliance of Museums Publications Design Competition.
