In 2020, as TEFAF’s physical fairs in New York and Maastricht were cancelled due to Covid, we worked with the organization to create its first week-long online-only fair. TEFAF Online emphasized real-time connection between visitors and gallerists, as well as a shared sense of presence among attendees. Visual cues highlighted works recently viewed by others, while a “Surprise Me” feature encouraged serendipitous discovery.
Essential to TEFAF’s continued activity during the pandemic, the platform took a distinct approach to online art fairs—drawing from the atmosphere of TEFAF’s physical editions and from our prior work across the cultural sector. The digital format also expanded access, welcoming new audiences worldwide and presenting each artwork with richly layered materials that deepened engagement and storytelling.
